<H2><A NAME = "Misc">1. Miscellaneous</A></H2>
<B>User's Guide</B>: The <I>Retrospect Express User's Guide</I> is a file in Adobe Acrobat's portable document format (PDF) which requires the Acrobat Reader application, version 3.0 or later. A free Acrobat Reader installer is included on the Retrospect Express CD-ROM and it is available on <A HREF="http://www.adobe.com" TARGET="_blank">Adobe's web site</A>, which also has technical help on using Acrobat and PDF files. You will find tips on using the <I>Retrospect Express User's Guide</I> on page 2 of the PDF.<P>
<B>Mac OS 8 and 8.1</B>: Retrospect Express is compatible with Mac OS 8 and 8.1, including HFS+. Before you upgrade to Mac OS 8 or 8.1, we suggest you perform two complete, verified backups to separate StorageSets. After upgrading your system, begin backups to new StorageSets. These precautions give you something to fall back on in the event of a major system problem.<P>
<B>Power Macintosh System</B>: We recommend using Apple's System Software 7.5.3 or later with all Power Macintosh and clone models, especially PCI models. System 7.5.3 includes several improvements and fixes a few problems you might otherwise encounter with Retrospect Express. Later system software may be necessary with some hardware configurations.<P>
<B>Restoring Subvolumes</B>: Subvolume definitions may be re-identified following an operation restoring a large number of folders. The Subvolumes may have incorrect names (because they were re-associated with incorrect folders) in Retrospect Express' volume selection window and Browsers. The cause has to do with the invisible directory identification numbers of folders.<P>
To prevent this rare problem from occurring, erase or format the destination volume before you use Retrospect Express' "restore entire disk" feature. To avoid Subvolume confusion, check the names and accuracy of all Subvolumes after any large restore operation (such as restoring an entire disk). You will have to re-define each Subvolume on a volume after a full volume restore.<P>

<H2><A NAME = "Software">2. Software Conflicts and Workarounds</A></H2>
<B>After Dark</B>: Retrospect Express does not automatically launch on a backup Macintosh while After Dark 3.0 or later is displaying a screen saver and Retrospect Express' "Show Apple Menu Icon" Notification preference (on by default) is turned off. After Dark modules which intensely use the backup Macintosh CPU may slow backup performance.<P>
<B>Apple CD-ROM</B>: Apple's CD-ROM extension versions 5.3 and 5.3.1 prevent Retrospect Express (and other software) from accessing a CD-R drive connected to a Macintosh. The interfering driver, included with Mac OS 7.6 and certain Mac clone computers, takes control of the CD-R at startup and makes it appear as a CD-ROM drive to the system. A newer version of the extension allows you to use your CD-R or CD-RW drive as intended. It is available from <A HREF="ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates/US/Macintosh/Display-Peripheral/" TARGET="_blank">Apple's FTP site</A>.<P>
<B>AppleShare 4.2.1</B>: When restoring or duplicating files to an AppleShare file server disk, some copied applications can be assigned incorrect type and creator codes, such as BINA and pdos. This is caused by a bug, which is fixed in AppleShare IP 5.0. To avoid the problem in 4.2.1, use the file server as a mounted volume. Or, turn off AppleShare when restoring or duplicating files to the server, but this does not preserve privileges.<P>
<B>AppleShare 3.0/AppleTalk Remote Access</B>: Before using Retrospect Express to back up an AppleShare 3.0 server that also is an AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA) server, contact Apple to update to AppleShare 3.0.2 (or a later version). A problem with AppleShare 3.0 when used with ARA causes AppleShare to prevent new logins after a volume is backed up with Retrospect Express. There is no need to upgrade unless you use ARA on the same Macintosh with AppleShare.<P>
<B>At Ease</B>: Apple's At Ease prevents Retrospect Express from launching automatically to execute its scheduled scripts. Start Retrospect Express manually from within At Ease before leaving the backup Macintosh so Retrospect Express launches and runs scheduled scripts unattended.<P>
<B>AutoDoubler</B>: For best compatibility, use version 2.0.6 or later, which is part of Norton DiskDoubler Pro 1.1.3. Earlier versions could cause Retrospect Express to report error -36. If you have questions about AutoDoubler, contact Symantec at 541.465.8440 or 800.441.7234 or <A HREF="http://www.symantec.com" TARGET="_blank">visit the Symantec web site</A>. During the compare pass of a duplicate operation Retrospect Express reports a data offset error at byte 40 for a number of AutoDoubler-compressed files. This is caused by an AutoDoubler bug in which it does not set the BNDL bit of compressed applications. It is important to understand that the data is not corrupt and that the issue is only cosmetic. Use a program such as Norton Utilities to fix affected applications.<P>
<B>First Class server</B>: To avoid problems with a First Class server, close down the server before backing it up. With a version earlier than 3.5, also run the utility to update the Post Office Map. This avoids errors with backups and ensures the server can be restored.<P>
<B>General Controls</B>: Early versions of the General Controls control panel included with System 7.5 sometimes caused Retrospect Express to report error -15276 or error -15277. To avoid these errors, update your system software to version 7.5.3 or later.<P>
<B>HFS+/Mac OS 8.1</B>: When the Daylight Savings time setting or local time zone is changed in the Date & Time control panel, the Mac OS shifts the local creation and modification times of files on HFS+ (extended) volumes. This affects Retrospect Express' normal backups when it scans the volumes for files which need to be backed up. Because file date/time stamps are different, Retrospect Express marks every file for backup. Retrospect Express is simply performing an incremental backup as it usually would; the only abnormality is that every file appears to have been modified. For more information regarding HFS+ date/time stamps, refer to <A HREF="http://www.dantz.com/technical_support/technotes/tn-405.html" TARGET="_blank">Dantz Technical Note 405</A>, "Effects of HFS+ on Retrospect when Standard or Daylight Savings Time Changes."<P>
<B>Macintosh Easy Open</B>: On some systems using Apple's Macintosh Easy Open, after you eject a disk or removable cartridge the Macintosh may request that you insert the same medium. If you see such a dialog after Retrospect Express has ejected a disk or cartridge, it is not Retrospect Express that wants you to insert it. (Retrospect Express would never eject a medium then ask you to insert it immediately thereafter.) If you experience this problem, disable Macintosh Easy Open. Typing Command-period is often useful for cancelling the Finder's disk request.<P>
<B>Microsoft Mail</B>: Microsoft Mail 3.0 and 3.1 data files on an MS Mail workstation often become corrupted. MS Mail 3.1a data files become corrupted when the workstation's mail application is open while Retrospect Express backs it up. Update to version 3.1a and implement a custom Selector with Retrospect Express that excludes busy MS Mail data files.<P>
<B>Microsoft Office Manager</B>: A bug in the Microsoft Office Manager extension causes the Finder to hang or prevents shutdown when Retrospect Express is scanning the volume. Update to version 4.2.1c, part of Microsoft's Office update for Power Macintosh. Also, Microsoft Office Manager does not draw its pull-down menu properly when Retrospect Express is the active application. When you switch to another application, the MOM menu draws properly.<P>
<B>Now QuickFiler (formerly Now Compress)</B>: For best compatibility, use version 5.0.2 or later and set it to compress individual volumes rather than all volumes. <B>RAM Doubler</B>: You must use version 2.0.1 with System 7.5.5 or later. <A HREF = "http://www.connectix.com/html/updater_page.html" TARGET="_blank">Visit the Connectix updates web page</A>.<P>
<B>Shutdown Items</B>: When Retrospect Express restarts or shuts down the backup Macintosh, items in the Shutdown Items folder are ignored.<P>
<B>Speed Doubler</B>: You must use version 1.1 or later. Prior versions may result in hangs during restore operations with large volumes. <A HREF = "http://www.connectix.com/html/updater_page.html" TARGET="_blank">Visit the Connectix updates web page</A>.<P>
<B>StuffIt SpaceSaver</B>: For best compatibility, use version 4.0 or later. For update information contact Aladdin Systems at 408.761.6200 or <A HREF="http://www.aladdinsys.com" TARGET="_blank">visit the Aladdin web site</A>. If you are duplicating files to a removable disk (such as floppy, Zip, Jaz, SyQuest, or optical cartridge) you should disable the "Location is on: Ejectable Disks" option in SpaceSaver's "Don't Compress" options. Otherwise SpaceSaver runs out of space trying to decompress the files on the removable volume when its Desktop Database is rebuilt. With the option disabled, SpaceSaver does not try to decompress the files as the database is rebuilt.<P>
<B>Some specialized accounting software</B>: To ensure the integrity of backups for the MediMac®, DentalMac®, ChiroMac®, and Great Plains accounting systems, back up as described in Chapter 8 of the <I>Retrospect Express User's Guide</I>, under "Programs Which Do Not Update File Dates." To restore your accounting data, always use the "Restore an entire disk" option to restore the SnapShot of the accounting Subvolume to a new, empty Subvolume.<P>
<B>Mail servers and groupware servers</B>: You cannot run Retrospect Express on a Macintosh running older mail and groupware server software, including QuickMail LAN and Meeting Maker. To avoid problems with these older servers, disable the server software before backing them up. Many newer products, including AppleShare IP (5.0 or later) mail server, QuickMail Pro server and Now Up-to-Date server, allow normal Retrospect Express operation while the server is active. Contact your server software vendor for their latest backup recommendations.<P>

<H2><A NAME = "Hardware">3. Hardware Conflicts and Workarounds</A></H2>
<B>PCI Power Macintosh SCSI ID #5</B>: PCI Power Macintosh models may hang during Retrospect Express operations. Make sure no device--source or destination--is at SCSI ID #5 on either SCSI bus. To solve this problem update your system software to version 7.5.3 or later.<P>
<B>Quadra/LC/Performa 630</B>: The Macintosh 630 series has a SCSI problem that causes random hangs when transferring large amounts of data. To solve this problem update your system software to version 7.5.3 or later.<P>

<H2><A NAME = "Devices">4. Supported Devices</A></H2>
These notes provide information regarding Retrospect Express and specific SCSI storage devices. For details on SCSI and hardware, refer to the <I>Retrospect Express User's Guide</I>, Chapter 3 · Hardware.<P>
Drives listed in these notes have been extensively tested and qualified for use with Retrospect Express by Dantz. If your drive's mechanism is not mentioned refer to the <A HREF="http://www.dantz.com/technical_support/latest_express_read_me.html">latest read me file</A>, which includes the latest list of supported devices. If it is a new drive it may be supported by a new version of Retrospect Express or a <A HREF="http://www.dantz.com/upgrades_and_updates/rdu.html" TARGET="_blank">driver update posted on the Dantz web site</A>. If your drive is not supported and it is an old drive, it may not be qualified by Dantz. These notes on backup devices are divided into categories by the type of mechanism and media used by each drive. To find the name of your drive mechanism, click the Devices button on the Retrospect Express Directory's Configure tab. To get additional device identification information for any type of drive, click the SCSI Status button.<P>

<H3><A NAME = "RDU">Driver Update</A></H3>
<P>Dantz adds support for devices by releasing a new driver update, a "plug-in" file you place in the folder with Retrospect Express. When circumstances permit, Dantz includes the latest driver update with Retrospect Express and it is automatically installed when you install Retrospect Express. (To reinstall the Retrospect 4.0 Driver Update, reinstall Retrospect Express.)</P>
<P>To see which version of the Retrospect 4.0 Driver Update you have, view the operations log. It lists the version of the driver update, if present, each time it logs the launch of Retrospect Express.</P>
<P>If you have no driver update, or your driver update version is too old for your device (as listed under <A HREF = #CDR>Supported CD-R and CD-RW Mechanisms</A>), you can <A HREF="http://www.dantz.com/upgrades_and_updates/rdu.html" TARGET="_blank">get the latest Retrospect 4.0 Driver Update from the Dantz web site.</A>
</P>
<H3><A NAME = "All">All SCSI Devices</A></H3>
You must properly terminate both ends of your SCSI chain (that is, your Macintosh and all SCSI devices connected to it) to maintain its communication integrity. You must also assign your backup device a unique SCSI identification number. Chapter 3 of the <I>Retrospect Express User's Guide</I> explains the fundamentals of SCSI chains and termination. The documentation included with your Macintosh and with your backup device should explain their individual termination requirements.<P>
<H3><A NAME = "Firmware">Firmware</A></H3>
Certain drives require specific versions of firmware, the drive's built-in controlling software. To determine your drive's firmware version, click Retrospect Express' Configure tab, click Devices, and click the SCSI Status button. If your firmware is an earlier version than is required, contact your drive vendor.<P>
<H3><A NAME = "Async">Asynchronous SCSI</A></H3>
Some drives require SCSI Manager 4.3 or later. All AV and desktop Power Macintosh models and clones have SCSI Manager 4.3 built-in. You can add it to 68040-based Macintosh models by installing System 7.5.3 or later.<P>
<I>NOTE:</I> Apple PowerBook 1400, 5300, and Duos do not support SCSI Manager 4.3.<P>
<H3><A NAME = "Removables">Optical or Cartridge Drives</A></H3>
Retrospect Express supports all drives which appear as volumes on the Desktop. This includes removable cartridge drives from Iomega and SyQuest, and magneto-optical drives from Epson, Fujitsu, Maxtor, Mitsubishi Chemical, Olympus, Philips, Pinnacle, Ricoh, Sony, and others.<P>
Retrospect Express' storage devices window (from Configure>Devices) shows removable disk drives with mounted media. When it also shows a local hard disk, the formatter used to format the hard disk told the Mac OS the fixed hard disk is removable or ejectable. Contact the formatter's vendor to find out how to configure your hard disk such that it does not appear ejectable to the Mac OS.<P>
<I>WARNING:</I> If your formatter makes a hard disk appear ejectable and you are backing up to removable disks, be especially careful never to accidentally select the hard disk as a backup destination.<P>
<H3><A NAME = "CDR">CD-R and CD-RW Drives</A></H3>
Recordable compact disc drives require special software, as they are not directly supported by the Mac OS. When backing up, CD-R and CD-RW drives cannot be used like hard disks or floppy disks because they do not appear as volumes on the Desktop.<P>
Not all CD-R and CD-RW drives use the same technology. Drives capable of packet writing are the only drives ideally suited for backup and only those drives listed below can be used with Retrospect Express. As other mechanisms become available, Dantz evaluates them for possible support in future updates.<P>
With certain CD-R and CD-RW drives, in the unlikely event the power fails while writing, the disc and all files previously copied to it may be unusable. We recommend that you protect against this by rotating media to create multiple copies of your data. See the <I>Retrospect Express User's Guide</I> for more information on rotating media in backup strategies.<P>
